Pause to Lead: The Power of Reflection in Leadership Success

In my practice as an executive coach, working closely with many leadership teams, I've come to appreciate a crucial insight. It's a simple yet profound understanding, often overlooked within the unceasing pressure of corporate life. This insight is simply about creating space for thinking, reflection, and connection with ourselves. Many leaders operate under the assumption that productivity is directly proportionate to the hours they put in. They focus on being 'busy', equating action with accomplishment. However, I've seen a different story unfold through my years of leading and coaching. Leaders who consciously take time out for thinking and reflection tend to be more effective and demonstrate higher resilience and creativity. They are more connected to their teams and have a clearer organisational vision.

We need to breathe. We need to pause. We need to reflect. This isn't merely a nice-to-have but an essential aspect of effective leadership and a fulfilling life. Let me share why this insight is so vital. Our world is so busy and filled with numerous demands on our time and resources that it's easy to forget this. But pausing to breathe and think can help us handle our fast-paced lives better. Life isn't about always rushing and trying to get to the next thing. It's about the quiet moments in between all the rush. It's about the times we stop and think about what's going on. In his book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, " Stephen Covey offers that the space between what happens to us and how we react is critical. In that space, we can decide how we want to react. And how we react can help us grow and be free. This is where we can reach our full potential.

So, to all you leaders and people making changes out there, ask yourselves this: are we too busy doing things that we forget to just be? When can we listen to ourselves and the world if we're always moving? Taking breaks on purpose can help us be more aware of what's happening inside and outside of us. This is when we can hear our inner voice, which can help us take control of our lives and understand ourselves better.

How do you take a break? Just breathe. Not the kind of breathing we do without thinking, but deep, mindful breaths. When we breathe purposefully, we can feel calmer, reset our bodies, and stay focused on the present moment. Stop thinking that our thoughts don't matter. The way we see the world is our reality. It's not a trap but a chance to change how we see things. We can decide to see new things, difficult things, and uncomfortable things as chances to grow.

Our lives are full of meaning. Every time we stop and think, we understand this meaning better. We connect with what's most important to us. Love this meaning. Care for it. Let it drive you. What we do every day shapes us. So, let's make taking breaks, being peaceful, and being present part of our everyday lives. Even though it may seem strange in a world where everyone is always trying to do more, it's in these quiet moments that we can really grow. Our daily habits make up our reality. So, let's be thoughtful about them. Let's make taking breaks, eating well, exercising, and sleeping enough our essential habits. Let's make our brains and bodies get used to these good habits.

This isn't easy, though. We'll mess up. We'll fall down. That's okay. It's all part of learning and growing. And if you need help, find someone who can guide you. Let's listen to our bodies, our minds, and our souls. Let's allow ourselves to take it easy sometimes. Let's change our routines and ask 'What if?' instead of 'What's the usual way?'

Remember, life isn't about always being busy. It's about the quiet moments and calm times. It's about growing in the spaces between the busyness. Pause. Breathe. Think. This is the mantra that I've seen transform leadership teams and individuals alike. Making this a regular part of your routine can be the key to unlocking a whole new dimension of leadership effectiveness and personal fulfilment.
